Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has distanced himself from posts on Facebook and Twitter which condemned the lynching of a student Deborah Samuel in Sokoto.

Ms Samuel, a Christian 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, was killed on Thursday for alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

Following the incident, a message was posted on Atiku’s social media pages.

“There cannot be a justification for such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered and all those behind her death must be brought to justice. My condolences to her family and friends,” the message read.

However, some Muslims knocked the presidential hopeful for his comments. Some of them threatened not to vote for him if he secures the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Atiku soon deleted the post on Facebook, saying that he did not authorise it.

“This evening I received information that a post was made that doesn’t agree with my orders. I use this to announce that any post without A. A. is not from me. May God protect us,” he wrote in Hausa.

The former Vice President also took down the post on Twitter.
